Home Renovation: North Curl Curl

Brief

This home came to us as an architect-designed alterations and additions project with DA approval. The clients entrusted us to amend the original design to maximise a new approach and to realise the true potential of the home.

Unique Aspects

Such critical design enhancements include:

  • raising the existing ground floor by 450mm to be at the same height as the alfresco slab
  • raise the ground floor sill heights to conceal neighbouring properties without affecting the ocean views
  • raise first-floor height by 150mm, ever-improving the view
  • the implementation of exposed concrete, structural steel and spotted gum timbers to the external facade

Story

Paul and Caroline were living and working in Hong Kong when they first contacted us in January 2017. They had DA approval for their substantial renovation and were looking to commence the build towards the end of 2018 when they were back in Australia.

When they returned to Australia, Peninsula Homes were engaged and we set about working with the clients to ensure their DA approved plans met all their needs and that we could achieve this within their desired budget. Work commenced on the project in late May 2018 and the home was handed over to the clients in early July 2019.

Thermal comfort and energy efficiency were top of mind for ourselves and the client alike. The glazing, a combination of louvres and large double-glazed panels, was designed to ensure this home captured the sea breeze to cross-ventilate the home. Hand-crafted spotted gum brisé soleils, not only give a spectacular finish to the exterior of the home, but serve to keep it cooler in the summer months, while ensuring the winter sun permeates the home. Underfloor heating, solar panels and superior insulation result in an environment that is efficient and comfortable all year round.

Hardwearing Kronoswiss Aquastop laminate oak flooring was chosen and is a floor that certainly stands up to the demands of a young family and pets.

The end result is a home with an aesthetic material mix and colour palette producing a sophisticated and timeless beachside home.
