Every detail of your design matters. With an energy-efficient home, your comfort and the longevity of your build are top of mind.
In your new home, aesthetics and sustainability meet, creating a space that breathes with the essence of the Northern Beaches landscape.
As a Master Builders Green Living builder, we know that energy efficiency lies in the details, and passive features in your knockdown rebuild make the difference.
Heating and cooling alone consume around 60% of the average energy consumption of a home, and considering sustainability in the design phase drastically reduces these costs.
Your new home will save energy, water and money, all while minimising your environmental footprint.
01.
This is all about working in harmony with the seasons. Of course, the warmth and light from facing north are wonderful (especially in winter), so wherever possible we ensure your main living areas are north-facing. We also minimise west-facing windows (or avoid) to lessen the harsh summer afternoon sun.
While we can’t always choose the perfect north-facing block, we incorporate many design elements to make the most of your site and to give you the best possible living conditions. Custom-sized full-depth eaves and sun-shading structures, such as screens, are two of the many features we commonly use.
02.
Finding comfort in your home starts with balance, and the role double-glazing has in the reduction of heat loss and heat gain is definitely worth considering for an energy-efficient home.
Glazing is key when maximising cross-flow ventilation and light in your new home, along with the positioning and sizing of windows to harness light and air. Double-glazing has become more affordable, making it an excellent option for temperature regulation.
Combinations matter; louvres, highlight windows, and light voids all work together. These design elements capture breezes, allow rising heat to escape, and increase the light in your home.
03.
Never to be underestimated, insulation is a one-off cost that provides continued benefits for you and your family, for the life of your home.
When insulation is placed in the ceiling, walls and floors, you experience an extremely comfortable living environment, and the acoustic benefit of minimising noise transfer between rooms (whisper quiet sounds, even in a busy home).
Properly laid insulation positively impacts the running costs of your home, and is a fundamental element for energy efficiency.
04.
The flow of light through your home inspires your connection with each room, and considering lighting early is essential for creating a warm and inviting home. We plan lighting from the very beginning of the design phase (compared to many builds that only begin discussing lighting during the electrical layout phase).
Your living areas, kitchen, and bedrooms are designed so that there is very little or no need for artificial light during the day. And, if it’s specified, we always source the most energy-efficient lighting we can.
05.
Your design will have defined spaces that reflect your family’s needs, and part of this process is to create zones within your home. Whilst open-plan living is trending, carefully considered zones can reduce energy costs in the long-term and provide positive energy efficient benefits.
We’ll create areas where doors can be closed off if desired, so that only the room being used can be heated and cooled. When air-conditioning is used, we specify multi-zoned systems, giving you full flexibility to turn on or off in the rooms required.
06.
Using the warmth of the sun is an intuitive way to use renewable energy, whilst reducing your power bills.
Solar panel technology has advanced considerably and the initial cost in the outlay is greatly offset over time, driving your power costs down significantly. We also design flexibility into your system, to allow future growth or uptake of new technology.
A properly installed solar panel and battery storage system can be so efficient that it meets all of your power requirements, and we have many instances where we’ve achieved this in our client's homes.
Living in harmony with the environment and building an energy efficient home doesn’t have to come at the sacrifice of design; in fact, with us, they work together.
These considerations, at every stage, have a profound and positive effect on your lifestyle. Sustainable principles mean you can enjoy the benefits of reducing energy and water consumption, increasing your home’s comfort and health, and saving on long-term costs.
